"Hello, my name Ishtyaq and I was born and brought up in Uttar Pradesh. Our family has a very long association with the art of carpets, dating back to before Indian Independence. My father, uncles and grandfather worked for British Companies manufacturing carpets and rugs during those days.
"I grew up seeing my father and uncles weave beautiful carpets. I would see them work everyday, from reeling the yarns to weaving to completing exquisite carpets. It was an amazing sight to see. My father worked with the British company for 25 years and later started his own unit.
"It was inevitable for me to follow suit. After completing college, I joined my father. We would supply to exporters and it was a non-stop work. I worked as a designer. Somehow I have an eye for unique designs and it was great fun.
"In 1975, I left home to look for greener pastures. I set up my own carpet workshop and it was smooth sailing since then. My designs are mostly Persian and Mughal inspired. I often visit tombs and monuments of Mughal times to derive inspiration.
"My younger brother and my two sons are working with me. Along with us, there are five regular assistants who work tirelessly to meet our clients' requirements. Over my 30 long years I've have the opportunity to teach the art of carpet weaving to hundreds of artisans, and I am proud to say that they have set up their own workshops and are doing well."
